Dishwasher-Friendly Phone From Seal Shield: Civilization Reaches Its Acme – Gizmodo

“For those moments when you just can’t control the urge to dip your phone in a jar of honey,Seal Shield has announced the world’s first dishwasher-friendly phone. Yes, really. Pair it with your dishwasher-safe keyboard!

Let’s make it clear—dishwasher safe obviously goes hand in hand with butt ugliness. Just look at that thing. It’s dual SIM, with a 2.0-megapixel camera, has GPS and GPRS connectivity. Not exactly brimming with top-notch spec under that water-resistant casing, but some sticky-fingered cretin out there is bound to consider this a Very Good Idea.” [Seal Shield via Gizmodo.]

Guardian Waterproof Case Allows Me to Get My Kindle Wet – Gizmodo

Guardian Waterproof Kindle Case

The Guardian polycarbonate waterproof case is all I need to get my Kindle on vacation to Goa. It won’t only protect it against cocktail spillage, but it will make it float on the tub or the sea.

And on top of that, it’s waterproof down to one meter, just in case I want to take it from the hammock to a snorkeling swim. Because that’s what I really want to do while I’m snorkeling or in the shower: Read The Old Man and the Sea.

My Kindle will also remain fully functional, thanks to the flexible material covering the keys. If I actually had a Kindle, that is.

Gizmodo – How Non-Latin Domain Names Could Be Used to Steal Your Money

“Unicode is great because it supports multiple languages simultaneously, bringing international understanding, universal peace, and planetary love. And so is ICANN’s decision to allow domain names that use non-Latin alphabets. Until both combine to steal your credit card numbers.

Or your login name, passwords, address, or whatever other data a phishing site can get from you.

Until now, there was an easy way to test if a site was legit or not: You just look at the browser URL. If it’s not paypal.com or amazon.com or whatever.com, then it’s not those companies’ web sites, no matter how well they clone their layout and graphics.

The problem will come in 2010. That’s when sites’ URLs would start popping in non-Latin alphabets like cyrillic. And that’s when there will be cases of mistaken identity: Just check the image above, in which the russian word “raural” becomes “paypal.” Can you see what this is going to be bring? Yes, unless someone comes up with rules soon, this will bring a big bag sports bag full of hurt.”

HP Ink Costs More Than Human Blood

Chart: Relative prices of different liquids.

“As this graph shows, printer ink is rather expensive, and costs more than things like human blood or a barrel of crude oil.”

Should we really compare healthcare products to other commercial products, especially ones we can buy in a store? Sure – printer ink is costly, but what do we gain by putting it in relation to human blood?

Shine On, You Crazy Gadgets

I spent this decade hunting for the perfect gadget. I never thought I would end up with tech as good as this. But it’s not the tech that interests me the most anymore.
